Here’s How to Move Your Bobcat Zero-Turn Mower
So your Bobcat® zero-turn mower won’t move. Now what? You need to finish a job, but the zero-turn isn’t going to start or get out of the ditch on its own. Here’s how to manually push or pull your mower, as well as a couple of tips to avoid that “Why won’t my zero-turn mower move?” moment in the future.
Common Causes for a Zero-Turn Mower Not Moving
Your zero-turn is probably not moving for one of these reasons:
- Won’t Start
- Starts but Won’t Move
- Stuck (in a ditch or in mud)
Before you try to move the machine, take a second to identify which problem you’re facing. If you need service, this helps the techs diagnose it faster, getting your mower back up and running sooner.
How to Manually Push a Bobcat Zero-Turn Mower
Now that you know what might be causing the issue, here’s how to get the mower ready to move:
- Release the Parking Brake
- Complete a Safety Check
- Engine is off
- PTO switch is off
- Traction levers are locked in neutral
- Area is clear of people and obstacles
- Release the Transmission: With the hydrostats engaged, a Bobcat zero-turn mower will not roll very easily. You’ll need to disengage the transmission. Look for bypass levers on both sides of the mower (locations may vary by model. Pictured below is the location for the ZT3500).
- Push the Mower to the Location of Your Choice
From our Service Team: Don’t push or pull your mower without disengaging the hydrostat transmission.
Getting the Transmission Back in Action
Once the mower is in place and you’ve corrected the problem, you’ll need to restore the transmission:
- Park on level ground, engage the parking brake
- Make sure the PTO switch is off, the traction levers are in neutral
- Make sure the area is clear of people and obstacles
- Start the engine at low speed
- Test drive the mower (this ensures the hydros are reengaged and functioning properly)
When to Call a Technician
If the mower still won’t start or move after following these steps, it’s time to call in a professional. Transmission or engine problems can sometimes require special tools and training. If you’ve tried everything and it’s still not moving, reach out to White Star Machinery (or the Bobcat dealer closest to you).
Keep Your Bobcat Zero-Turn Mower Running Smoothly
Once you get your mower working again, here’s a couple of things you can do to avoid future problems:
- Regularly check fluid levels
- Blow off your mower (remove grass clippings and leaves, make sure there is no debris on your mower before and after each use)
- Follow the maintenance guidelines for your Bobcat zero-turn model
From our Service Team: Most starting and movement issues can be prevented with routine maintenance. Complete these steps before and after each mowing season.
